ABSTRACT

This study addresses the critical need for sustainable and cost-effective ceramic brick production in Nigeria, where housing shortages and high construction costs are prevalent. The aim is to develop and evaluate a ceramic brick production plant utilizing locally sourced materials. The specific objectives include preparing and characterizing ceramic raw materials, designing and fabricating the production plant, and evaluating its performance. Soil samples were collected from various locations in Ekiti State, and geotechnical tests assessed their mechanical properties, including compressive strength and moisture content. The production plant consists of a mixer, moulder, and kiln, designed with standard methodologies to optimize efficiency. Simulation analyses using Autodesk Inventor evaluated the structural integrity of key components. Results show that Isan clay emerged as the most suitable material, with a Plasticity Index of 22.34 and an average compressive strength of 22.5 N/mm2, significantly exceeding the Nigerian Industrial Standard requirement. The plant achieved a product efficiency of 65.7% and a plant efficiency of 88.9%, indicating effective utilization of resources. In conclusion, the establishment of this ceramic brick production plant not only meets the increasing demand for quality building materials but also promotes local resource utilization, contributing to regional economic development and sustainability efforts in Nigeria. This research highlights the potential for similar initiatives in other emerging economies, providing a practical solution to housing challenges.
